Older People

As we age, there are many things we can do to support our bodies. We want to support you to keep active, identify risks in and around your home, reduce your risk of falling and provide support information should you have a fall.

Preventing Falls

As we get older, our bodies become more likely to develop health conditions that can result in a fall; our muscles, joints, eyesight and hearing can all start to deteriorate. Any deterioration can result in an increased risk of falling.

Medications can also contribute to the risk of falling, therefore it is important to speak to your health professional is you are experiencing any side effects.

It is really important to have regular eye examinations, medication reviews and to see support for any underlying issues.

There are many things we can do to reduce our risk of falling around the home, some of these include;

  • Wearing appropriate well-fitting footwear
  • Identifying trip hazards such as wires and rugs
  • Removing excess clutter
  • Knowing where your pets are

Our Somerset Fall Stop Leaflet has lots of tips on staying safe from falls and local contact numbers for organisations that may be able to support you.
