Varenicline (Champix) PGD Training

The Varenicline (Champix) PGD training will equip pharmacists with the knowledge and skills for the use of Champix as an aid to stop smoking and where it fits in the local stop smoking treatment programme. The items covered include:

1) The PGD documents and supporting documents
2) Varenicline use and confidence around counselling
3) Payment processes
4) Any other relevant information

Training date and times: Tuesday 3rd July , arrival from 6.00pm for a 6.30pm start. Finish at approximately 9.30pm.

Venue: Edgar Hall, 8 Cary Court, Somerton Business Park, Somerton TA11 6SB.

Is this workshop for me: This event is for registered pharmacists working in community pharmacies in Somerset only.

There is no charge for the training; however cancellations will be dealt with in line with the Public Health Training Cancellation Policy which details that a minimum of 5 working days’ notice must be given not to incur a £50 charge for non-attendance. Non-attendance on the day will incur the £50 charge as standard.


Past Courses

NCSCT Smoking Cessation Core Knowledge and Skills, level 1 & 2

Duration: Two Days

The level one and two smoking cessation skills training course is open to healthcare professionals, and those who wish to offer a smoking cessation service within their organisation. Please note that participants are not fully qualified as smoking cessation advisers until they have completed both level one and level two, and the online NCSCT companion level one and two training course.

Level one of the course will equip participants with background knowledge on the following areas:

  •          Tobacco usage
  •          Addiction
  •          The impact of smoking on health
  •          The benefits of giving up smoking
  •          How the smoking cessation service works
  •          The pharmacological approach to smoking cessation and Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) products

Participants will also be introduced to motivational interviewing techniques, and advice on effectively engaging with clients. During level two, this basis will be combined with the NCSCT best practice guidelines, when participants will learn how to guide and motivate clients through each possible stage of their quit attempt.


NCSCT Smoking Cessation Core Knowledge and Skill for Clinicians

Duration: 3 hours

The NCSCT Smoking Cessation for Clinicans training will revisit the evidence based behavioural support sessions. This is a practical (skills) event that focuses on patient centred communication and how to help smoker stop and stay stopped (relapse prevention). It will compliment the NCSCT core knowledge and skills training that is completed on line prior to the training.


NCSCT Smoking Cessation in Group Sessions

Duration: One Day

This training is for experienced NCSCT Level 2 Advisors who are interested in running closed or open group sessions. It will equip participants with the skills to practice their facilitation skills and manage challenging situations.


Champix PGD

Duration: 3 hours

Champix (Varenicline)

Duration: 3 hours

This course is open to health care professionals and smoking cessation advisers who have completed the level 1 & 2 smoking cessation training course.

Participants will learn how and why Champix (Varenicline) is used as a smoking cessation aid alongside one-to-one behavioural support. Attention will be paid to assessing how suited a client is to using Champix, in line with the necessity for awareness of the client’s health and safety during their quit attempt, and with the supply protocol specific to the adviser’s locality. Participants will also be provided with guidance on how to effectively tailor the support their clients receive during their time using Champix.


Motivational Interviewing

Duration: One day

This advanced practice workshop on motivational interviewing is open to all experienced healthcare staff working with the public on a day to day basis. This workshop will help you to address the difficult issues that may arise when working with people who resist change, while increasing your confidence to make a positive impact on the lives of your patients/clients.

This workshop will equip you with the skills required to help you manage patients/clients who:

  • Seek medical advice and treatment, yet continue to make poor lifestyle choices
  • Seek help yet never follow through with treatments and/or action plans provided
  • Continuously present barriers to recommendations given
  • Regularly attend appointments, yet do not take up referrals given for further treatment

Following this one day workshop, you will have the skills required to assess people’s understanding of the risks posed to their health by their current lifestyle choices, to identify when a person is motivated to make a change, and to help your patients/clients make better lifestyle choices.


Pharmacotherapy Interative Training

Duration: 3 Hours
