Below are a series on free online training options to develop your skills, knowledge and confidence in talking to someone who may be feeling suicidal. 

  • The training listed is free
  • E-Learning is a structured learning session available any time to anyone, electronically.
  • Digital Classrooms are taught sessions at a set time by a real person, via an electronic device.

ZSA ‘Step Up’ and Suicide Gateway Training

Two very brief online introductory modules covering social isolation and suicide awareness. Covers the effect of isolation on our mental health and how to help someone who may be isolated and skills and tips to help you have a conversation with someone you think might be considering taking their own life.

ZSA Suicide Awareness Training: Let’s Talk

A more in-depth suicide awareness training module to give you the skills and confidence to help someone who may be considering suicide. The module aims to enable people to identify when someone is presenting with suicidal thoughts/behaviour, to be able to speak out in a supportive manner, and to empower them to signpost the individual to the correct services or support. This training also works towards the wider aim of breaking down the stigma surrounding suicide by encouraging open conversations about it.

NHS Health Education England / Public     Health
Suicide Prevention The course is designed for anyone who regularly comes into contact with members of the public in their day-to-day role, whether clinical or not.  At the end of this course you should feel more confident in having a conversation with someone you believe might be having suicidal thoughts or feelings.  A few simple words of concern and offer of help could be all it takes to encourage someone to take the first steps in seeking further help and support. The course may also encourage you to discuss any concerns you have about suicide with your colleagues and family members.

The course maps to Public Mental Health Leadership and Development Framework and Mental Health Core Skills Education and Training Framework.

 Elements included are: Introduction, Why Talking Matters, Risks and Warning Signs, What You Could Say, Support and Wellbeing, Next Steps.

MindEd Suicide and Self-harm Prevention / Safety Planning
MindEd Hub
MindEd is part of the National Suicide and Self-Harm Prevention programme (SSHP). A range of interactive training modules that can be accessed as e-learning for an individual, or as a workshop for delivery to groups.  Lots of opportunity for reflection and examples of how to have a conversation. Four cornerstones of this training are:  Empathy, active listening, help seeking, containment.
